May 16th, Johnny Brenda’s will host two of Philadelphia’s most populated bands. Northern Arms and Mercury Radio Theater take identical orchestration and produce strikingly different timbres. The former, a thick and dreamy dark romance, grinding fading hopes into ethereal despair; the latter, a violent amalgamation of gypsy dance melodies mixed with the existential joy of an overdrawn bank account. Both 9-piece ensembles are recording new albums for release in the fall of 2015. The evening will begin with the shimmering voice of Julia Rainer.
And then there were voices; throats would be a better description, a battalion of throats that rang forth in a stark resonance that seemed to flood the room like an oily wave.
“Think of the sumptuous heartbreak deep in the American soul. Think of the powerful ache of yearning, the fleeting lightning-strike of joy. Think of late nights, steam rising off the street outside your 3AM window. Think of Sunday morning, steam rising off a river as slow and inscrutable as myth. We all live in this blend of spirit and mystery and damned hard reality, but fortunately, intersecting that very same crossroads, are the songs of Northern Arms, seemingly written with the express purpose of reflecting our most fervent dreams.” – Dave Cantrell, Stereo Embers Magazine
MERCURY RADIO THEATER
Philly’s only nine-piece exotica punk orchestra, with its full line up of guitars, drums, bass, violin, vibraphone, accordion, saxophone and trumpet, will be using its combined forces to capture the vox populi and overthrow the bourgeoisie! May 16th will mark the unveiling of the third and final installment of its ongoing series: The Fabulous Red Menace, the thrilling conclusion to the tale of a mild mannered factory worker and his transformation to a beacon of revolution. Don’t miss this chance to dance off the shackles of capitalist oppression!
Julia Rainer is a Singer/Songwriter who combines her powerful, yet sultry, voice with her Neil Young style guitar playing to create a unique sound. Her lyrics are dark and emotional, and her sound combines folk, soul, blues, and the bare bones country sound of Hank Williams.
Julia has been playing and writing music for 12 years. She has played in almost every small venue in Philadelphia, and in many of the surrounding cities of the Northeast. Julia gained her musical experience touring the U.S. playing classic rock covers with the School of Rock. She has accompanied famous musicians, such as Ann Wilson, Eddie Vedder, Marky Ramone, Peter Frampton, and Steve Perry.
