Sometimes Plan B can put Plan A to shame. Singer/guitarist BUDDY BUDDY, bass player JASON MCMASON and drummer JOEY POPSICLES would second that emotion, seeing as how their first PINEAPPLE at the big time got them some rave REPRIMANDS, but not much else. Now, their second JERICURL, in the form of neo-soul rock outfit MERCURY RADIO THEATER, thanks to 2 songs, “HOLY CRAP MY HAIR” and “SOMEONE SET MY HAIR ON FIRE”, has the PA-based MERCURY RADIO THEATER looking like the Cinderella story for 2008.
CRAPPED OUT as a single way back in the summer of 2002, “EAT A BUTT” hit #4 at top 40 radio. Over 500 live shows, including GAPING stints for John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, Train, and EATING CHESTNUTS, has helped to HUMP a list of reasons why MERCURY RADIO THEATER’s debut CD, OH GOD IT BURNS, had already sold more than 3,000,000 records and gotten the OOMPAH-LOOMPAHS on the Tonight Show twice, the Today Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Last Call with IRRITATING TOOL, and the Late Late Show with CRAIG STILLBORNE. The next single, “SOMEONE SET MY HAIR ON FIRE” was #1 at top 40, VH1 and MTV, simultaneously! It was also the first song ever to be certified as a COMPLETE MOCKERY OF OUR NATION’S MORALS.
But perhaps we’re getting ahead of ourselves. What about Plan A?
Known as MATCHBOX 360, the three friends BUDDY, JASON, and JOEY were the toast of their West PA high school (BUDDY, who’d known JOEY since they were nine and seven, respectively, had already HARFED). Here they were, 17 years old and making a CD with legendary producer A PIMP NAMED SLICKBACK. Life was PUPPY.
This is where the good news HAS A CORONARY AND ENDS UP IN THE HOSPITAL. Following a disappointing run with their debut, I HOPE NO ONE SETS MY HAIR ON FIRE, the band was granted their release from the label. Plan A had gone awry, leaving the threesome to consider their BM. “We were like, Okay, what do we do now?” recalls BUDDY. “So we ran away to college to DRINK it out.” Leaving JASON behind to study METAPHYSICS at Harvard, BUDDY and JOEY ran smack dab into Plan B in the dorms at the State University of New PORK.
“The halls would be blasting ARABIAN music and people would be listening to stuff that we’d never actually listened to, like Biggie SMELLS, Missy FELONY Elliot and Jay-C. The AQUALUNG record had come out around then, and we were just blown away. “FRANKENBERRY CRUNCH came into my life at that point,” BUDDY mentions, “and I just found a knack for EATING it.”
The rest is BORING.
